Outdoor activities in winter
Would you like to actively experience the Västerbotten winter? So why not try dog sledding, ice climbing or winter riding? These are just some of the wild outdoor activities on offer in Västerbotten.
Few experiences can take you closer to the soul of the wild and the beauty of nature in winter than a trip out with a team of dogs. The dogs move fast, taking you out on an action-packed journey through forests, over mountains, past bogs and across frozen lakes. The silence, the crisp, clear winter sky and the barking of the dogs will be your companions as you travel. And if you're lucky, you'll see reindeer, foxes and roe deer as you whizz by.
There are lots of dog sledding organisers in Västerbotten and Lapland; they can help you to find the ultimate experience. Head out as a passenger on a day trip, or why not embark upon a week out sledding, controlling your own team of dogs?
If icy adventure is what you're looking for, head for the rocky Kittelfjäll mountain. You can take a course in ice climbing here and try the sections on Henriksfjäll mountain or the wall on Borkafjäll mountain, several hundred metres high. If you'd like to try out your strength and technique, there are also some great places where you can go bouldering - which, as the name suggests, climbing massive boulders. All you need for your adventure is a pair of decent shoes and a crashpad.
On horseback in the wilds
You really feel at one with nature when you're on horseback out in the wilds. Ride across the white, wide open plains - the horses will lead the way on their strong legs, up the mountainside and through the valleys. Listen to the squeaking of the snow under the horses' hooves, or enjoy the birdsong beside a rushing stream.
