Skis

Västerbotten is known as Skidornas Rike, or the Kingdom of Skis. But there’s really nothing particularly strange about that. The county offers some fabulous opportunities for both cross-country and downhill skiing in the mountains, inland and at the coast.

Downhill skiers and snowboarders have an extensive range of options to choose from – slopes not far from town, or classic ski resorts in the mountains. Tärnaby and Hemavan are world-famous, mainly thanks to our legendary local skiers Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson. Ammarnäs, Borgafjäll, Klimpfjäll and Nalovardo offer skiing for all the family. You can try out your skills in ravines and forests at Kittelfjäll, a famous Mecca for all off-piste adventurers, head for the bare mountain region above the tree line, or try heliskiing.
There are lots of family-friendly ski slopes inland: Malå, Storklinta, Bygdsiljum and Agnäs, to name but a few. Snowboards will love Middagsberget outside Vännäs, which offers a fantastic halfpipe and several big jumps thanks to the local snowboard gymnasium.

Cross-country skiing for everyone!

A lot of world champions and Olympic medallists in cross-country skiing trained in Västerbotten. But that probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise when you think that the county is home to vast expanses of snow and prepared trails.
Cross-country skiing starts right outside your door in the mountains of Västerbotten. Head out into off-trail terrain, or follow the trails out into the wilds and the breathtaking winter wonderland of Västerbotten.

Test your abilities on the Kungsleden trail between Hemavan and Tärnaby, or take the easier Drottningleden train from Laisaliden to Hemavan. Hotels and tourist agencies can provide tips to help you out.
The Umeå region is home to many outstanding trails. The illuminated trail at Nydalasjön lake is prepared with artificially frozen snow and is open from early autumn to late spring. The trails at Gammlia are more hilly and vary from 1.9 km to 10 km. Just outside Bjurholm you’ll find a total of 27 kilometres of trails, and Nordmaling has one of the most beautiful day trails in Västerbotten.
